Often, early-stage prostate cancer will not produce symptoms, and that is why regular prostate cancer screenings are essential to detect cancer in the earliest stages when it is more easily treated.
Men with advanced prostate cancer may experience the following symptoms:
- Discomfort during urination
- Frequent urination
- Weak or interrupted urine flow
- Frequent urination at night
- Blood in the urine and/or seminal fluid
- Onset of erectile dysfunction
- Discomfort while sitting
Prostate cancer screening
Wesley provides prostate-specific androgen (PSA) blood test for prostate cancer screening. The ACS recommends men consider getting a prostate screening after discussing the risks and benefits of the screening with their healthcare provider.
Additionally, the ACS suggests men consider the screening at the following ages/risk factors:
- Men who are 50 years old and at average risk and expect to live ten or more years
- Men who are 45 years old and at high risk, meaning a brother, father or son developed the disease
- Men who are 40 years old and at higher risk, meaning more than one immediate male family member developed the disease
Advanced prostate cancer biopsy technology
Wesley Woodlawn provides advanced technology for prostate cancer biopsy procedures, called UroNav Fusion Biopsy System. Our urologists use this procedure for early- and late-stage prostate cancer detection.
Prostate cancer treatment
Wesley's oncology program is accredited by the Commission on Cancer (CoC). We offer expert oncologists who partner with specialists in urology, radiation therapy and other departments to personalize your treatment using a team approach.
Prostate cancer treatment at Wesley may include chemotherapy, radiation oncology, surgery or a combination of these treatments. If surgery is necessary, your Wesley surgeon may use robotic surgery to perform the procedure, which minimizes your scarring, hospital stay and recovery.
