At Wesley, we believe patients must take an active role in their care and rehabilitation to achieve the desired outcome.

Our therapy teams maintain close communication with each other and with your physician, family members, as well as any outside agencies involved in your rehabilitation program. We provide continuity of care, beginning with the earliest possible intervention and continuing through the transition home or to another facility.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy can help restore physical function, improve mobility and relieve day-to-day aches and pains. Additionally, physical therapy can prevent or limit permanent physical disability in patients with an injury or disease, as well as restore, maintain and promote overall fitness and health.

Your physical therapy regimen may include:

  • Therapeutic exercise
  • Balance training
  • Heat and ice therapy
  • Ultrasound
  • Electrical stimulation and biofeedback
  • Traction for spine injuries
  • Manual therapy, including myofascial release, craniosacral therapy and soft tissue mobilization techniques

Acute rehabilitation

The acute rehabilitation team (ART) works primarily with patients who have experienced a traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, multisystem trauma, cerebrovascular accident (stroke) or other neurological diseases. A team member visits all trauma patients admitted to an intensive care unit, as well as other patients requiring the acute rehabilitation services, as determined by a physician.

Occupational therapy

Wesley’s occupational therapy program helps patients reach their highest level of independence with daily tasks through strengthening and coordination exercises, patient and family education, home modification recommendations and adaptive environment.

Pediatric rehabilitation

The WesleyCare Child Therapy program at Wesley Children's Hospital provides inpatient and outpatient pediatric rehabilitation to children who have a variety of rehabilitation needs. Experienced team members include audiologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists and speech/language pathologists. Each child is evaluated and an individual treatment program is designed to meet the child’s needs. We have a convenient, centrally located clinic in Wichita for outpatient therapy services.

Audiology

Wesley’s audiology department is responsible for screening the hearing of over 6,000 newborns each year. When necessary, diagnostic testing can be performed when the newborn is still in the hospital or as an outpatient after discharge.

Our outpatient clinic tests patients of all ages, from two-week-old infants to older adults. Our audiologists provide a diagnosis of hearing, loss, middle ear dysfunction or normal auditory function with recommendations for follow up as needed.

Speech-language pathology

Our speech/language pathologists focus on cognitive-linguistic abilities and swallow function. We use a combination of techniques to improve function including dietary changes, communication modifications and strengthening and coordination exercises.

Cardiac rehabilitation

Patients who experience a heart attack, receive a cardiac diagnosis or have heart surgery often need cardiac rehabilitation to restore their heart health. Wesley’s cardiac rehab program combines education and medically supervised exercise to improve the patient’s overall health.

Neurological rehabilitation

Neurological rehabilitation

After a patient experiences a neurological event, such as a stroke or neurological surgery, neurological rehabilitation is sometimes needed to regain motor skills. Our physical, occupational and speech therapists create a personalized care plan for each patient to regain maximum function and independence.
