Halloween can be great fun for kids, but it also poses hazards. Each year, close to 1,500 children nationwide end up in emergency departments with Halloween-related injuries!

Here, Dr. Christopher Cassidy, medical director of Emergency Services at Wesley Children’s Hospital, shares tips for keeping your trick-or-treaters safe:

  1. Make it easy for cars to see your child by having them carry glow sticks or wearing a glow necklace or reflective tape.
  2. Have your child remove his or her mask while walking to houses and up and down stairs to minimize the risk of trips and falls.
  3. Say no to long robes and gowns that are easy to step on, leading to falls and broken bones.
  4. Go in groups to improve visibility and make sure at least one adult supervises the outing.
  5. Don’t let your child eat their candy until you can inspect it. Discard any candy that looks old, opened, homemade or unusual.
