According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 287,850 new cases of breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in the U.S in this year alone. Detecting breast cancer early significantly increases treatment options and improves overall outcomes. Screening mammography is the only method proven to reduce deaths due to breast cancer by detecting breast cancer early.

For women with an average risk of breast cancer, schedule an annual mammogram beginning at age 40.  For women with a high risk of breast cancer, talk with your physician regularly starting as early as age 25 about individualized risk for breast cancer, given higher risk women may benefit from genetic counseling or early screening.

Keep in mind that there are a few types of breast screening including a standard mammogram, a breast MRI, which is used for women at higher risk, and a breast ultrasound, generally used for women with lumps or abnormalities.  Our experienced clinicians can determine the best screening option with you.
