WICHITA – Wesley Woodlawn Hospital & ER will break ground later this month on a $700,000 expansion of its Intensive Care Unit (ICU).  The unit will expand from eight to 12 beds.

“As we have seen consistent growth in our ED and our surgical volumes, it has become apparent that we needed additional ICU beds to handle this capacity,” said Steve Edgar, Wesley Woodlawn CEO. “We fully expect to see not only more ICU patients, but in an increase in our overall medical-surgical census as we improve the ICU capacity.”

Wesley Woodlawn has undergone major upgrades in service over the past few years, including the addition of MRI imaging, bariatric surgery and elder-care certification through the national NICHE – Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders – program. Add that to an award-winning emergency department, and Wesley Woodlawn’s growth has caused many departments such as ICU to operate consistently at full capacity.

“The timing is right for the expansion,” said Mary Kastens, Wesley Woodlawn’s ICU manager.

Expanding the ICU will allow the hospital to be even more responsive to the needs of the community, physicians and first responders, she said.

“We want to provide exceptional service to the entire community,” Kastens said. “We are excited to be able to better accommodate the needs of our critical patients and provide the care they need.”

Key Construction is the contractor on the project and it is expected to be completed by early December.
