WICHITA – Wesley Medical Center and Galichia Heart Hospital are improving the patient experience by adding personal service dining, a room service model that ensures patients get the food they want and nourishment they need.
“This personalized touch gives our patients an entirely different level of service and further emphasizes our commitment to provide the best experience possible,” said Bill Voloch, Wesley’s chief operating officer. “Eating a healthy meal is an important aspect of healing and recovery, so we want to do all we can to ensure our patients are getting delicious food in a timely manner.”
Wesley’s Expressly For You – Personal Service Dining™ is a bedside order system that allows the patient to select his or her meal order from a wide variety of menu items personally provided by a host or hostess. Completed meal orders are then prepared in the kitchen and delivered to all patients on a specific nursing unit at the same time by the person who took the order.
Wesley’s pediatrics department has a separate menu that offers “kid-friendly” food options.
Galichia’s At Your Request – Room Service Dining® is a “hotel style” order system in which patients use their bedside phone to place their meal orders with an operator working in a central call center. Completed meal orders are then prepared in the kitchen and delivered to the patient between 30-45 minutes of his or her placed order. Patients can order any item on the menu at any time the kitchen is open for business, as long as the item meets the patient’s physician-prescribed meal plan.
“Our patients enjoy the opportunity to order their meals personally,” said Steve Edgar, Galichia’s chief executive officer. “The program provides a wide variety of menu options which our patients appreciate, as their individual food preferences vary.”
Each facility’s program was selected based on the size and the needs of the patient population it serves. Both hospital campuses started providing personal service dining in April.
The Wesley program has an assigned host or hostess for each nursing floor that is responsible for taking meal orders, delivering meals and retrieving meal trays for patients. This efficient one-on-one approach provides a single source for accountability and provides interaction with the patients and their families.
The hospitals’ dietary programs are provided by Sodexo, an industry leader in healthcare dining.
“Sodexo’s dining programs provide a consistent and supportive environment that meets patient and family needs,” said Roger Hanson, Wesley’s food service director. “We want our patients to feel special – throughout their day and throughout their stay, and these programs let us do that.”
