WICHITA –Wesley Medical Center has been designated a Blue Distinction Center+ for Spine Surgery® and a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement®, as part of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Blue Distinction Specialty Care program. Wesley was one of only nine Kansas facilities to be recognized by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas for its program expertise and cost-efficiency.
Blue Distinction® is a national designation awarded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality healthcare in several areas including cardiac care, complex and rare cancers, knee and hip replacement, spine surgery, transplants or bariatric surgery.
The goal of Blue Distinction is to identify medical facilities that deliver better overall quality and medical outcomes for a specific area of specialty care, helping patients and doctors to make more informed hospital choices.
“For the past several years, there has been a renewed focus on improving the quality of healthcare as it relates to better outcomes for patients and controlling costs for those who purchase health insurance,” said Andrew Corbin, BCBSKS president and CEO. “Wesley is doing more than just talking about improving quality; they are demonstrating that they are capable of meeting stringent national quality standards when providing spine surgery or joint replacement.”
Spine surgery at Wesley is performed with the latest in spine surgery technology – the O-Arm® Surgical Imaging System. This technology offers precise navigation, fewer and smaller incisions, preservation of healthy tissue, minimization of complications, shorter recovery time and the reduction of repeat surgeries. Wesley is the only Kansas hospital outside of the Kansas City area to have this spine surgery technology.
Wesley’s Rapid Recovery Program provides faster recovery and better outcomes for total hip or total knee surgery patients. It’s a comprehensive program that starts even before surgery, with a 90-minute program in which hospital staff explain what to expect during hospitalization and beyond. Program participants include the patient, family, nurses, physical and occupational therapists and care managers who help plan for care needs after dismissal from the hospital.
“Wesley’s Rapid Recovery Program and spine surgery technology provide better recovery outcomes for our patients than other hospitals and care facilities in our region,” said Dr. Francie Ekengren, Wesley Healthcare chief medical officer. “The designation represents what we at Wesley already know: We are the best hospital for spine, hip and knee surgery.”
Blue Distinction selection criteria cover a broad range of quality measures and are publicly available on www.bcbs.com/bluedistinction. By earning the designations, Wesley Medical Center has demonstrated:
- Established programs, performing required annual volumes for certain procedures
- Appropriate experience of its care teams
- Full facility accreditation by a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)-deemed national accreditation organization
- Adherence to evidence-based clinical care measures and guidelines with input from physicians and medical organizations
- A comprehensive quality management program
Wesley Medical Center’s Rapid Recovery Program, which is also available at Wesley Woodlawn Hospital & ER, is also a UnitedHealth Premium® Total Joint Replacement Specialty Center and is certified by The Joint Commission.

About Blue Distinction Centers
Blue Distinction Centers (BDC) met overall quality measures for patient safety and outcomes, developed with input from the medical community. A Local Blue Plan may require additional criteria for facilities located in its own service area; for details, contact your Local Blue Plan. Blue Distinction Centers+ (BDC+) also met cost measures that address consumers’ need for affordable health care. Each facility’s cost of care is evaluated using data from its Local Blue Plan. Facilities in CA, ID, NY, PA, and WA may lie in two Local Blue Plans’ areas, resulting in two evaluations for cost of care; and their own Local Blue Plans decide whether one or both cost of care evaluation(s) must meet BDC+ national criteria. National criteria for BDC and BDC+ are displayed on bcbs.com. Individual outcomes may vary. For details on a provider’s in-network status or your own policy’s coverage, contact your Local Blue Plan and ask your provider before making an appointment. Neither Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association nor any Blue Plans are responsible for non-covered charges or other losses or damages resulting from Blue Distinction or other provider finder information or care received from Blue Distinction or other providers.
