Pediatric diagnostic imaging at Wesley Children's Hospital
Wesley Children's Hospital offers specialized imaging services for pediatric patients, including kid-friendly CT scans and MRI studies. All exams are performed by a pediatric radiologist, who ensures reduced radiation exposure. Our CT scans reduce radiation exposure by 83 percent for cardiac scans. For scans on other parts of the body, our CT scans reduce radiation by 50 percent, compared to the traditional CT system.
Our modern technology provides a high-definition cardiac image which allows physicians to detect heart disease using non-invasive procedures. Enhanced pictures of the coronary arteries and the opportunity to look at each section of the heart individually can help identify potential heart issues or heart attack victims.
The Optima MR450w 1.5 MRI allows the child’s head to remain outside of the magnet during the exam, which is less stressful for the child. We provide special video goggles for pediatric patients while their MRI is being conducted. The goggles allow patients to relax by blocking out the sights and sounds of the machine while watching DVD movies, cable TV, iPad videos or listening to music.
MRI technologists can communicate via a microphone with the child and can also project a video image of themselves in the goggles so the child can see who is talking, helping to reduce anxiety.
