Expert Care for Kansas Kids
Wesley Medical Center provides the widest range of expert pediatric care in the region. Across five separate children's care locations, more than 50 pediatric specialists and subspecialists utilize state-of-the-art technology to provide expert care. Our facilities offer a family-centered healing environment to ensure pediatric patients and their families feel comfortable.
Wesley’s commitment to caring for children in Kansas includes the opening of the $28 million children’s hospital: Wesley Children’s Hospital. The Wesley Children’s Hospital now brings dedicated pediatric care to families in Kansas and northern Oklahoma. The expansion and renovation includes facelifts for the pediatric unit, pediatric intensive care unit and the region’s only pediatric emergency department.
The 31-bed pediatric unit is geared toward the needs of children and their families. The unit is staffed by board-certified pediatric hospitalists. All patient rooms are private. Child life specialists use age-appropriate explanation of procedures, therapeutic play and stress-reduction activities to make hospital stays more understandable and less stressful for our patients.
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
The 15-bed pediatric intensive care unit is staffed by board-certified pediatric intensivists, experienced pediatric nurses, technologists and respiratory therapists. State-of-the-art technology and design contribute to quality care.
Parents are not considered visitors and are welcome any time. Visitors should be limited to two people at the bedside at a time. In special circumstances, additional visitors may be allowed. We ask that visitation by other people be restricted during shift changes (7:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.) so that nurses may exchange information and reassess patients.
Wesley supports a philosophy of family-centered care. Adjacent to the PICU are parent sleep rooms, showers and the Ronald McDonald Family Room. A Ronald McDonald House is also located near our campus.
Wesley has the only pediatric ER in this region. The staff includes pediatricians, pediatric nurses and child life specialists, as well as respiratory therapists, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals who specialize in pediatrics.
Pediatric care away from the main campus
Facilities away from the main campus include Wesley’s Pediatric Surgery Clinic; the Pediatric Center of Kansas (a collaboration with the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, KU Wichita Pediatrics, and independent physicians with outpatient clinics staffed by pediatric subspecialists); and a Ronald McDonald House where parents of hospitalized children can stay overnight. These locations are conveniently located next to the main Wesley Medical Center campus.
No matter what location you visit, care is provided by pediatricians, many of whom have subspecialties in neonatology, surgery, intensive care, infectious diseases, allergy/immunology, radiology, endocrinology, neurology, cardiology, pulmonology, urology, orthopedics, anesthesia and child development. Other experienced staff includes child development therapists, pediatric respiratory therapists, pediatric nurses, child-life specialists, dietitians, care coordinators, pharmacists and chaplains.
Our staff is specially trained to meet the emotional, as well as physical needs, of young patients and their families. Child-life specialists focus on helping children of all ages feel more comfortable during their hospital stay.
Wesley’s pediatricians and medical staff know you want to be involved in your child’s healthcare. Parents are encouraged to ask our staff any questions they may have concerning their child's hospitalization. We provide education programs to help parents understand and provide for their child's healthcare needs.
