Lung Screening

Lung Cancer Screening Program

According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 2,000 Kansans will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year – the No. 1 cause of cancer death in the United States. High mortality rates are due to the fact that lung cancer is most often diagnosed in later stages, and early-stage lung cancer does not show any symptoms.

How does the screening program work?

Simply call a Wesley oncology nurse navigator at (316) 962-LUNG (5864) and answer a few questions. If you are eligible for the screening, the nurse navigator will find the most convenient screening site for you and schedule your screening. The screening takes less than five minutes, and you do not have to do anything special to prepare. You’ll simply go into a low-dose CT scanner, a machine that uses X-rays to make 3-D images of your lungs. The nurse navigator will contact both you and your physician with the results, as well as coordinate with any follow-up care, if necessary.

Are you eligible for screening?

You must:

  • Be 55 to 77 years old and have smoked at least 30 “pack years.” Calculate pack years by multiplying the number of packs smoked per day by the number of years smoked.
  • Be a smoker or a person who quit smoking less than 15 years ago.

If you do not fit all criteria, but feel you may benefit from the screening due to exposure and/or family history, please consult Wesley’s oncology navigator. If you meet all the criteria for being at a high risk of lung cancer, you don’t need a referral, but you should discuss this with your physician before calling.

Is the screening covered by insurance?

The screening may be covered by major insurance plans. As each plan varies, please check with your insurance provider for coverage information. Follow-up for any abnormal findings is usually covered by most health plans. If not covered by insurance, the screening is only $249 and includes a clinic consultation with a lung cancer physician extender.
