Affiliation agreement offers support for development of services, consulting and ER best practices

WICHITA – Wesley Medical Center has entered into a five-year affiliation agreement with South Central Kansas Medical Center (SCKMC) to help improve the hospital’s existing services and potentially create new ones, with an initial focus on the hospital’s emergency department services.

“I know we have a tremendous facility staffed with amazing people,” said Virgil Watson Jr., South Central Kansas Medical Center CEO. “But perception is reality, and we want to improve our image in the community. Since the emergency room is often the front door to our hospital, we wanted to start there.

“And we wanted to partner with an organization that could provide some best-practice ideas when it comes to emergency care. We found that in Wesley.”

Wesley’s EmergencyCare Network recently announced that it was providing ER wait times now at all four of its emergency rooms – the Wesley Medical Center main ER, Galichia ER, Wesley West ER and its Pediatric ER. Wesley continues to be the only hospital in south-central Kansas to provide up-to-the-minute average wait times for its emergency rooms, and those times average well below 30 minutes. Patients can also check-in and access wait times by visiting Wesley ER Online Check-in.

“By focusing on getting our patients in a bed immediately, our average wait times were cut in half without adding staff,” said Bill Voloch, Wesley’s interim president and CEO. “We know we can help South Central Kansas Medical Center create these same efficiencies in its ER.”

Wesley also recently developed a “Ready Care” area in its main ER to quickly treat lower-acuity patients, further reducing wait times.

“We’ve seen a steady increase in our patient satisfaction as we’ve seen our average wait times decrease,” Voloch said. “And this has been during a very busy time for emergency volumes.”

Wesley has not purchased South Central Kansas Medical Center nor has any plans to manage any of its services. However, consultations with physicians or the use of Wesley staff when needed for certain services is a possibility. Wesley currently has affiliation agreements with 41 hospitals across the state of Kansas and northern Oklahoma that offer a variety of general support services, including telemedicine consultation and transporting.
