Hospital only facility in Kansas honored with national distinction for patient care, safety

WICHITA – The Leapfrog Group, a national healthcare quality ratings organization, has named Wesley Medical Center to its annual list of Top Hospitals. Wesley was one of just 98 hospitals recognized nationally – and the only hospital in Kansas – recognized in the organization’s annual survey, which measures hospital performance on patient safety and quality.

“Achieving this level of excellence isn’t easy, as evidenced by the fact that very few hospitals have earned this distinction,” said Bill Voloch, Wesley Healthcare president and CEO. “I congratulate the many staff and physicians who place our patients’ safety first.”

The survey focuses on three critical areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use and management structures established to prevent errors. Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including survival rates for high-risk procedures and a hospital’s ability to prevent medication errors.

Wesley will be recognized later this month at the Leapfrog Group’s gala and annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

“Leapfrog’s Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most prestigious distinctions any hospital can achieve in the United States,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Top Hospitals have lower infection rates, better outcomes, decreased length of stay and fewer readmissions.

“By achieving Top Hospital status, Wesley has proven it prioritizes the safety of its patients, is committed to transparency and provides exemplary care for families and patients in Kansas. I congratulate the board, staff and clinicians of Wesley whose efforts achieved these results.”

The Top Hospital award is given to urban, rural and children's hospitals that publicly report their performance through the annual Leapfrog Hospital Survey and meet the high standards defined in each year's Top Hospitals Methodology.  This year’s list includes 24 rural hospitals, 62 urban hospitals and 12 children’s hospitals. The Leapfrog Group also awarded Wesley Medical Center and Wesley Woodlawn Hospital & ER “A” safety scores in its 2015 Hospital Safety Score℠ rankings. The scores are assigned to U.S. hospitals based on preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections. The score is the gold standard rating for patient safety and is the first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety.

Wesley hospitals were the only facilities in the region to earn “A” rankings.

“Receiving an ‘A’ in patient safety speaks to our commitment of creating the best possible outcomes for our patients,” Voloch said. “We understand that what matters most to patients at Wesley is safe, effective care.”

Wesley was also recognized as part of The Joint Commission’s 2015 annual report “America’s Hospitals: Improving Quality and Safety,” for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, children’s asthma, stroke and prenatal care. Wesley is one of only 1,043 hospitals out of more than 3,300 eligible hospitals in the U.S. to achieve the Top Performer distinction.
