WICHITA –Wesley Healthcare, regional medical professionals and city dignitaries held a groundbreaking ceremony today to kick off the construction of Wesley’s $10 million freestanding emergency department – Wesley Derby ER. The new facility marks Wesley’s fifth emergency room location which includes Wesley Medical Center’s main ER, Wesley Woodlawn Hospital & ER, Wesley West ER and the region’s only dedicated pediatric ER.
“We’re excited to begin construction on this new facility and deliver emergency care right where our Derby patients and families live,” said Bill Voloch, Wesley’s president and CEO. “It’s the same expert care we deliver throughout the region, but in a more convenient setting for many.”
The 11,000-square-foot facility is located at the corner of 63rd Street South and Rock Road and includes 11 emergency room beds, imaging capabilities and an on-site laboratory. The facility is being built by JE Dunn and expected to open Nov. 1.
“This new facility will be fully equipped to provide high-quality, efficient emergency medical care for day-to-day needs as well as for more significant, emergency health events,” said Jeremy Pauly, Wesley EmergencyCare Network director.
“Derby is very blessed to have such a well-known and trusted ER provider in our community,” said Randy White, city mayor of Derby. “This facility will not only be a valued asset to our local citizens, but will also be able to provide medical service to the surrounding communities.”
The new emergency room also will provide average wait times for consumers to review and offer online ER check-in. Wait times for all of Wesley ER locations are available on Wesley’s ER check-in mobile phone app, which also allows patients to start their check-in process prior to arrival at any of Wesley’s ER locations. Patients also can check-in and access wait times by visiting wesleyonlinercheckin.com. Wesley continues to be the only hospital in south central Kansas to provide up-to-the minute average wait times for its emergency rooms.
“No one likes to visit an ER, so making the experience faster and easier is important,” Voloch said. “We know that medical outcomes improve and healthcare costs are lower when crowding is reduced in emergency departments. Providing wait times information and the ability to check-in before arriving are ways to do just that.”
The Wesley EmergencyCare Network commits to achieving an average wait time of less than 30 minutes for adults and less than 20 minutes for children. The “average ER wait time” represents the approximate time it takes for a patient to see an ER provider (physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner) after arrival to begin treatment. Last year, Wesley cared for nearly 120,000 patients in its emergency rooms.
