WICHITA – The Wesley Medical Center Auxiliary recently received a Gold Award of Excellence at the Hospital Auxiliaries of Kansas (HAK) Convention held in Kansas City. The award is the state’s top honor for hospital auxiliaries that have demonstrated service and commitment to their hospitals and communities.
Auxiliaries who earn this prestigious honor must meet 21 criteria set up by the HAK, such as participating in health-related community service activities, giving direct service to the hospital and contributing to health career scholarships.
“This represents all the hard work the whole auxiliary has exerted in supporting the hospital’s mission and objectives of serving every patient, every time,” said Marsha Rogers, auxiliary president and volunteer. “A volunteer is usually the first person and the last person the patient sees. We work to leave a really good impression on them.”
The Award of Excellence is a non-competitive plan for encouraging individual auxiliaries to exceed their own best efforts. HAK member auxiliaries have 7,551 members who contribute 700,000 hours and $1.5 million to Kansas hospitals, as well as more than $180,000 for health career scholarships.
Wesley is no exception. Last year, some 408 volunteers contributed about 49,000 hours to Wesley. The auxiliary funded $10,000 in scholarships to area students and contributed $88,275 toward grant requests and other projects such as special pillows, plant care, volunteer training, support of the Ronald McDonald Family Room, the infant blanket program, the Indigent Fund and the “We Care” dining tickets, to name a few, said Carol Stricker, guest services manager.
“Getting the gold award is another example of how much our volunteers care about our patients and our community,” she said. “It is definitely going above and beyond by participating in these requirements that ensure our volunteers are committed to our patients and families.”
