WICHITA – Wesley Medical Center continues to provide superior pediatric services with the addition of pediatric intensivist Laura Haws, MD, to its pediatric services team. Wesley now has four pediatric critical care specialists to care for seriously ill children.
“Caring for critically injured children requires different sets of skills,” Dr. Haws said. “You need to possess the medical knowledge to treat their conditions, but also provide them care in a way that puts them at ease.”
A pediatric intensivist is a hospital-based pediatric physician that can be called on to provide special care that a child may need as a result of severe asthma, serious injuries from accidents, overwhelming infections or other significant health issues.
“A child that is unstable, or appears to be suffering from a life-threatening condition, needs to have special care,” Dr. Haws said. “I appreciate the opportunity to be able to provide that close monitoring and treatment they need.”
As a member of both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Society of Critical Care Medicine, Dr. Haws is comfortable working with children from neonates through young adulthood. She completed her pediatric residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City, and she then fulfilled a three-year pediatric critical care fellowship at the University of Missouri at Kansas City.
Coming to Wesley to practice was an easy choice, she said, because of the emphasis Wesley has placed on pediatrics.
“Wesley provides the most comprehensive pediatric care in this region,” she said. “Services that include a pediatric ER, pediatric trauma unit, pediatric surgery clinic, low-dose CT imaging and more than 40 pediatric subspecialist physicians providing an array of healthcare services just for kids.”
Haws began her position with Wesley earlier this month.
