Family Life Education Classes

Classes are held at the following locations: Wesley BirthCare Center at the northeast corner of Hillside and Murdock streets; Wesley West ER & Diagnostic Center at 8714 W. 13th St.; and Intrust Learning Center at Wesley Medical Center, 550 N.   • “Babysitting for Beginners”: a single one-day class for youth ages 11-15 to learn to care for children of all ages, CPR training is included

Cost: $40, includes lunch

Wesley BirthCare Center: Saturdays; May 21, June 25, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

  • “Big Kids and Babies”: one 90-minute session of activities for children ages 3-6 to help prepare them to welcome a new baby, tour included

Cost: $10 per child

Wesley BirthCare Center: Saturday, May 7, 10-11:30 a.m.

 

  • “Breastfeeding”: two two-hour classes or one three-hour class to learn the advantages of breastfeeding

Cost: $25 per person or couple

Wesley West ER: Tuesdays, May 3 and 10, 7-9 p.m.

Saturday class, BirthCare Center: May 21, June 25, 9 a.m.-noon

 

  • “Breastfeeding and Returning to Work or School”: one two-hour class to learn about breastfeeding and returning to work or school. Pumping and storing milk included. Should be taken 4-6 weeks postpartum.

Cost: Free of charge, partners and caregivers are encouraged to attend

Wesley BirthCare Center: Wednesdays, May 4 and 25, June 8 and 22, 3-5 p.m.

 

  • “Car Seat Safety”: one two-hour class to learn how to select a safe car seat and use it effectively

Cost: free of charge

  • “Calming Your Baby”: one two-hour class on how to identify your baby’s needs to ease pressure and stress

Cost: $15 per person or couple

  • Car Seat Checks: your infant or child’s car seat will be checked for safety and proper installation by Wesley’s certified car seat specialists. Call 316.962.2105 for dates, times and location of car seat checks.

  • “Cesarean Birth”: one two-hour class to help prepare and schedule cesarean birth and tour the hospital

  • “Caring for Your Baby”: two two-hour classes or one three-hour class providing information about bathing, diapering, feeding, safety, child development, health and other practical information

  • “Childbirth Preparation”: six two-hour classes or two six-hour Saturday classes for expectant mothers and their partners to learn skills and information about birth

Cost: $80 per couple

Wesley BirthCare Center: Wednesdays, June 1-July 6, Thursdays, May 5-June 9, June 16-July 21, 7-9 p.m.

Saturday Class: May 7 and 14, June 11 and 18, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

  • “Mini Childbirth Preparation”: four two-hour classes for expectant mothers and their partners to learn skills and information about birth (condensed version of the six week class)

Cost: $50 per couple

  • “CPR for Infants and Children”: one three-hour class that includes information about child-proofing

your home

  • “The Dad’s Class”: one two-hour class for expectant and new fathers and their pregnant partners

  • “Grandparents to Be”: one two-hour class for future grandparents to learn about current birth practices and changes in feeding and newborn care

Cost: $15 per person

  • “Miraculous Multiples”: class for couples expecting twins or more to prepare them for the pregnancy, nutritional demands and parenting more than one infant

  • “Postpartum Care”: two two-hour classes about what to expect after birth

  • “VBAC” (vaginal birth after cesarean): one two-hour class about how to enhance your birth experience

  • “Off to a Good Start”: one two-hour class providing information on prenatal health; recommended to be taken 20 weeks before gestation

Look Good, Feel Better Workshop

Wesley and the American Cancer Society will host a free Look Good...Feel Better® workshop on Monday, June 6, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Wesley Medical Center, 550 N. Hillside. The program teaches beauty techniques to female patients in active treatment to help them combat the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. Pre-registration is required by calling Wesley Guest Services at 316.962.2100.

 

Smoking Cessation Class

Wesley Medical Center will hold free smoking cessation classes on Monday, May 9 and June 13 from 4-5 p.m. at Wesley Medical Center’s Cessna Conference Room, 550 N. Hillside. The program will be taught by Marshall Post, a respiratory therapist with over 30 years of experience. The sessions will review the costs of smoking, both financially and health-related, and provide a smoking cessation handbook. Information about Kanquit, the Kansas Tobacco Quitline, and lung screening opportunities will be shared. Wesley Friends Events

  • Health Screenings: cholesterol, glucose and hemoglobin screening: $10 for Wesley Friends members; $15 for non-members. Reservations are required. To make a reservation, call 316.962.8400.

  • Smart Driver Course, sponsored by AARP, can help older individuals drive more safely and may reduce insurance rates. Participants must attend the full session. No tests will be given.
