WICHITA – Wesley Medical Center will hold its 18th annual Autumn Garden Stroll and Senior 5K Run Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Botanica: The Wichita Gardens. The Wesley Friends event features a competitive run for athletes age 40 and up, and a fun walk through Botanica at distances ranging from an eighth of a mile to a mile.
“This year we added the garden fun stroll for folks who just want to visit the gardens and enjoy some great entertainment,” said Mark Bretches, Wesley Friends program manager and community relations coordinator. “Stroll participants get a T-shirt, food, entertainment and a Botanica admission for just $10.
“And there’s a huge social component as well – feel free to come and enjoy the entertainment and fellowship without walking at all.”
The gardens open at 3:30pm with the walk starting at 4:30pm and the 5K run beginning at 5:30pm Participants will enjoy live music from 37 Mile band, great food, giveaways and other entertainment.
The fast, certified 5K course goes through scenic Sim Park and along the Arkansas River, beginning and ending in Botanica, 701 N. Amidon. GoRun Wichita is coordinating the Senior 5K with Go Race, who is accredited as an RRCA Certified Race Director. The age groups are in four-year increments from age 40 to 100. Medals are awarded to the top 3 male and female finishers in each age group. The race will be using the BIBTAG chip timing system for the finish of the races. Race results will be available that evening at www.runwichita.org.
“This is a one-of-a-kind event because it offers a race exclusive for those to compete against others closer to their own age,” said Hugh Tappan, Wesley President and CEO. “It is not unusual to have participants in their 80s and even 90s at the Wesley Senior 5K.”
The entry fee for the 5K is $20 on or before Sept. 29 or $30 afterward. The cost for the garden stroll and social– which includes park admission, food, drink, entertainment and a T-shirt – is just $10. Register for the 5K online at www.gorunyourrace.com.
