At Wesley, expert care begins even before your knee or hip replacement. At our free seminars, hear hospital staff explain what to expect during and after your surgery at Wesley.
Nurses, physical and occupational therapists and care coordinators who help plan postoperative care outside the hospital will discuss the process and provide answers to your questions.
Knee & Hip Nurse Navigators – Your Trusted Guide
When you schedule your joint replacement surgery, an orthopedic nurse navigator will be assigned to you to provide care and guidance before, during and after your surgery. Your navigator’s role is to help you understand your care from the moment of diagnosis to treatment and recovery. Working directly with the patient, the navigator serves as a personal guide to joint replacement care. The navigator will visit you throughout your stay and make check-in phone calls when you get home. Our team consists of two nurse navigators – Paula Hopkins and Amanda Page. Both are specially educated, registered nurses with many of years of experience.
What is the Rapid Recovery Program?
Wesley Medical Center has a new program for the care and rehabilitation of total joint replacement patients. Called the Rapid Recovery Program, it is for patients having total hip or total knee surgery. Similar programs throughout the United States have resulted in faster recovery and greater patient satisfaction.
Keeping You Informed
Most people feel more comfortable about surgery if they know what to expect. To provide you with information in advance of your scheduled surgery and to answer any questions you might have, we invite you to a 90-minute class (no tests!). You should attend the class several days or more before surgery. At the class, hospital staff will explain to you what you can expect while you are in the hospital and after dismissal. Topics include:
- Preparation for surgery
- Review of equipment you will find in your hospital room after surgery
- Details about what to expect each day while you are in the hospital
- Pain control
- What to expect when you go home
- Rehabilitation to help you heal quickly
Speakers at the class include nurses, physical and occupational therapists, and case managers who help plan for care needs after dismissal from the hospital. All the speakers will be glad to answer any questions you may have. We encourage you to bring a family member or friend to the class. The classes are held on the second and fourth Thursday’s of the month from 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm in Wesley’s Jayhawk meeting room. If you plan to come to the class, please let us know by calling 316.962.2730.
