Pharmacy Student Clerkship
Pharmacy Student Clerkship
Our goal is to provide students with a practical and stimulating learning experience. Wesley is an acute care, tertiary, community teaching hospital licensed for 760 beds. The hospital is designated a Level 1 trauma center and a Level III neonatal intensive care center (both are the highest designations). Wesley provides clerkship opportunities for pharmacy students and serves as a primary teaching site for medical residents, students and other professional training programs.
Depending on the rotation, students have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of clinical services including: monitoring patients and providing drug therapy recommendations, physician rounding, code blue and trauma response, patient education, and formulary management. Students completing the hospital clerkship will also be exposed to a technologically advanced drug distribution system that incorporates bar code scanning, patient-profile based medication cabinets, and an electronic medication administration record.
Available rotations include:
Cardiology
Joe D. Slechta, PharmD
This rotation is designed to provide the student with the tools to become familiar with cardiology disease states and their treatments. The student will serve as the clinical pharmacist for the patients of the Coronary Care Unit and be responsible for improving patient care by applying evidence-based strategies to therapy. The student pharmacist will serve as a resource for all cardiovascular services, including, physicians, medical residents, physician assistants, advanced registered nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists and medical technicians. The student will have the opportunity to participate in the Anticoagulation Service and observe cardiovascular procedures if time permits. It is recommended that the student complete at least one internal medicine or family practice rotation prior to this clerkship to facilitate the transition of applying a pharmaceutical care model to a specialized patient population.
Critical Care
Dave Moran, PharmD, BCPS
Wesley’s Emergency Department is the largest in the state of Kansas, serving as a primary care site to nearly 60,000 patients each year. This busy department provides advanced trauma care to around 2,000 patients a year as an American College of Surgeons-certified Level 1 Trauma Center. The trauma resuscitation team includes board-certified trauma surgeons / critical care intensivists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, and many other health care workers. This team concept carries over into the Surgical Intensive Care Unit.
The student will become an active member of the multidisciplinary team, and in addition to assisting in trauma resuscitation, will make rounds with the team and make bedside therapeutic recommendations to staff and provide drug information to the team, patients, and family members. The student will care for the patients admitted to the trauma service on a daily basis. Care of these patients will include becoming knowledgeable of the patient’s history, injuries, medications, and therapeutic plan. The student will serve as a resource for all members of the team. The student is expected to spend the majority of his or her time in the clinical setting and will have the opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary activities and meetings, including daily rounds with the trauma team. In addition, trauma/critical care Services provides a rapid response team known as the sepsis team. This highly specialized group of health care workers is called upon to provide prompt care to patients exhibiting signs of septic shock with organ compromise. The student will become familiar with the protocols of the sepsis team and be able to provide recommendations for antibiotics, vasopressors, use of steroids, and other supportive care measures.
Hospital Medicine
Joan Kramer, PharmD, BCPS
Acute hospital medicine is a relatively new concept that has proven successful for improving patient quality of care and decreasing the number of days patients are hospitalized. Hospital Medicine is similar to internal medicine because a variety of patients with multiple disease states are seen on a daily basis. The hospitalist team includes pediatric medical residents, family practice residents, a pharmacist, and two care coordinators.
This rotation focuses heavily on hospital medicine patient care rounds. Some of the experience students will gain through this rotation include locating and communicating drug information, providing drug therapy recommendations, completing pharmacokinetic monitoring, understanding therapeutic goals, and performing patient education. A project or patient presentation is also a requirement of this rotation.
Internal Medicine
Tina Nester, PharmD
This rotation focuses on the pharmacist’s role in the pharmacological management of internal medicine patients. Rotation duties include daily comprehensive patient monitoring, participation in internal medicine team rounds, therapy recommendations, chart assessments, patient education, journal club meetings, presentations to pharmacy staff, and other projects as assigned. This rotation allows the student the opportunity to probe further into specific areas of interest and to build self-confidence in their decision-making skills.
Pediatrics
Chris Durham, PharmD
The student will interact with pediatric intensivists, pediatricians, neonatologists, pediatric residents, medical students, nurses and other pharmacists. Students will learn how to improve patient care using their knowledge of medications. The student will develop an understanding of medication dosing in pediatrics and age specific differences along with reviewing the etiology, pathophysiology, complications, signs, symptoms, diagnostic procedures, laboratory tests, pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments for diseases common to pediatrics.
