At Wesley, da Vinci is used for many hysterectomies as well as surgeries of the prostate, ureter, kidney, mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, colon and digestive system.

da Vinci enables physicians to perform some surgeries laparoscopically that otherwise would have to be done by opening the abdomen. Laparoscopic surgery uses small instruments and a camera inserted through a few small openings in the body.

The smaller incisions mean fewer wound complications. The shorter hospital stay can result in fewer lung problems and blood clots.Less postoperative pain is another advantage of this type of surgery.

Surgeon-Console-Mask-Nurseda Vinci offers several advantages over normal laparoscopic surgery. At the patient’s bedside are da Vinci’s four robotic arms attached to the surgical instruments and a lighted, miniature camera inserted through incisions less than an inch long.

At a console a few feet away, the surgeon views a color, high-definition image captured by the camera. The three-dimensional image can be magnified up to seven times the actual size, providing greater visibility than conventional laparoscopic surgery images. As the surgeon manipulates the master controls, his hand, wrist and finger movements are translated to the surgical instruments.

The instruments cannot move by themselves — the surgeon is always in control.However, da Vinci’s technology improves the surgeon’s movements. The instruments’ jointed-wrist design exceeds the natural range of motion of the human hand. The “tremor filtration system” further refines the surgeon’s hand movements. The ability to maneuver the surgical instruments very precisely helps avoid damage to adjacent tissue.
