WICHITA – Wesley Medical Center is partnering with the Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses in offering a medical-surgical nurse certification course. The course is being held May 8-9, during National Nurses’ Week, at Wesley’s Cessna conference room from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
The medical-surgical registered nurse certification, the gold standard of training in this field, acknowledges that medical-surgical nurses are required to treat a wide range of patient populations despite the sometimes misperception that these clinical professionals are “regular” nurses with little need to develop specialized skills.
“We are very excited to be offering this certification,” said Phyllis Williams, Wesley’s associate chief nursing officer. “Medical-surgical nurses provide care to a wide variety of patient populations and this certification demonstrates – and enhances – that ability.”
The Wesley family has dozens of nurses certified in a variety of specialties, from oncology to birth care. Each of these nurses has undergone extensive training to develop specific skills to better treat specialized patient populations.
“And we will be offering this course to medical-surgical nurses not just at Wesley but to nurses throughout the region,” Williams said. “This specialized training not only elevates the status of our valued med-surg nurses, but it also enhances the skills the employ in patient care. And that’s the most important thing.”
Nurses interested in signing up for the course can call Linda Long at 316.962.3080. Course participants will earn 14 continuing nursing education hours. The fee for non-Wesley employees is $125 and includes both days.
