KU Wichita Pediatrics and Wesley Healthcare’s recruitment of pediatric

specialists continues with hiring of intensivist Dr. Beryl Yaghmai

WICHITA – Wesley Children’s Hospital and the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita’s recruitment for the region’s first and only dedicated children’s hospital continues as pediatric intensivist Beryl Yaghmai, M.D., has recently joined Wesley’s pediatric services team. Yaghmai is the fifth intensivist to join the team, which enables the hospital to now provide 24/7 pediatric intensivist coverage.

“Serving as the region’s only verified trauma facility for all pediatric critical injuries and illnesses, it’s important to have intensivists available to provide any critical care services needed at any hour of the day,” said Tripp Owings, Wesley Children’s Hospital chief operating officer. “No other pediatric intensive care unit in our region offers this level of experience for emergencies.”

A pediatric intensivist is a hospital-based pediatric physician that can be called on to provide special care that a child may need as a result of severe asthma, serious injuries from accidents, overwhelming infections or other significant health issues. Critical care services can include everything from close monitoring to advanced life support.

With a fifth pediatric intensivist on staff, there will now be a specially trained physician in the PICU at all times, instead of simply having these specialists available on call.

"An ICU stay can be a very scary and emotional time for both a child and the family,” Yaghmai said. Physicians and staff trained in pediatric critical care medicine understand that, and work together to make the experience as easy as possible given the difficult circumstances. We have the expertise to care for critically ill and injured children, and work together with many pediatric subspecialists to provide the best care possible to our patients."

As a member of both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Society of Critical Care Medicine, Dr. Yaghmai is comfortable working with children from neonates through young adulthood. She completed her pediatric residency at the KU School of Medicine-Wichita and then fulfilled a three-year pediatric critical care fellowship at the University of Washington School of Medicine – Seattle Children’s Hospital in Seattle.

"I am very excited to return to Wichita as part of Wesley's new children's hospital," Dr. Yaghmai said. The children's hospital offers the most comprehensive pediatric care in the region with its pediatric ER, pediatric trauma unit, pediatric surgery clinic, low-dose imaging and more than 50 pediatric subspecialist physicians providing an array of healthcare services just for kids.

Since announcing the children’s hospital project, Wesley Children’s has successfully recruited eleven new physicians, representing specialties including pediatric surgery, pediatric cardiology and pediatric critical care.

And Wesley’s partnership with KU School of Medicine-Wichita makes Wesley Children’s Hospital both a regional pediatric hospital and an academic medical center, opening doors to the latest in treatments, technology, research and child advocacy. KU Wichita Pediatrics faculty, hospitalists and intensivists are part of Wesley’s comprehensive interdisciplinary team, which includes pediatric specialized nurses, pharmacists, respiratory care therapists and child development specialists.

“We want to provide the safest, most effective patient care possible for the children in this region,” Owings said. “This means getting children the care they need when and where they need it.”

Construction of the new $28 million hospital is expected to be complete in the fall of 2016 and includes a new façade on the hospital’s Hillside exterior, with a renovated entrance, lobby and elevators. Additionally, it will include a complete renovation of the pediatric intensive care unit, creating a new, all-private 15-bed PICU.
