WICHITA, Kan. – Hearts and Valentine’s Day go together like, well, chocolate and roses.

That’s why several area florists have decided that, in addition to delivering flowers this Valentine’s Day, they will be reminding women across the region to protect their hearts and learn more about heart disease – the No. 1 killer of women.

Ten florists in the Wichita area are partnering with Wesley Medical Center and the American Heart Association to educate women on the importance of a heart-healthy lifestyle. Beard’s Floral, BloomHaus, Dean’s Design, J.R. Koontz, Lilie’s Flower Shop, Tillie’s Flower Shop, Stems, Susan’s Floral, The Flower Factory and the Wesley gift shop will be including a card with information about the Go Red for Women initiative in every red roses flower arrangement.

“Valentine’s Day is traditionally when we take a moment to really appreciate the loved ones in our lives,” said Hugh Tappan, Wesley’s president and CEO. “I can’t think of a better way to let that person know you care than by helping her take care of her heart.”

“We want area women healthy and happy for many Valentine’s to come, and we appreciate the partnership of these florists in helping communicate this information.”

“You stole his heart. Protect yours. Text Go Red to 72727 for fun, heart-healthy tips,” the floral card reads, in addition to providing other online resources for information.

The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women initiative encourages women to make heart-healthy choices in the fight against heart disease. Go Red For Women is sponsored nationally by Macy’s and locally by Wesley Medical Center.
